Experimental Notes:

  • The purpose of this experiment is to demonstrate the use of the extraction technique as a method of separating and isolating mixtures of compounds. Many organic compounds have similar solubility profiles (high solubility in organic solvents and low solubility in water) and cannot be separated from each other directly by extraction. This experiment demonstrates the ability to use the acid-base properties of some compounds to change their solubility profiles.
  • Work alone. Each student will have an individual experimental set-up for this experiment.
  • Separate the benzoic acid and the benzocaine from the impure mixture by extraction. Store the recovered benzoic acid in your section's storage drawer until the next Lab Session for melting point and weight determination after they have dried.
